Hooks · v0.6.0-beta.3
Public betaYour in-game toolkit, from quick tweaks to new ways to fight
FFX Hooks puts optional controls, combat changes and new progression systems inside Final Fantasy X. For our first full set of notes, here is a tour of the public beta, including the new interface languages and the parts that still need extra care.
Highlights
- Open F8 to set up your game, use F7 for supported live controls, and open F9 for the Maechen question window. You can pick the features you want instead of enabling one big preset.
- Go beyond quick cheats: Vanguard Combat Engine, Elemental Dominion, Arcana of the Fayth and Equipment Workshop bring separate ways to change combat, build characters and develop equipment.
- This beta adds nine F8 interface languages, clearer menu sound feedback and an optional Fahrenheit V2 add-on. Gameplay options start disabled; some changes need a restart or a matching content pack.
What's included
- A dashboard inside the game. F8 groups controls into System, Boosters, Cheats, Extras, Input, Dev and Reforge. Navigate the options with a keyboard, wheel or controller; the mouse can switch tabs, while clicking individual rows is not yet supported. Nested menus let you confirm or cancel changes.
- Nine interface languages. Choose English, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Japanese, Korean or Simplified Chinese for F8. Audio and game-text language have separate selectors in System. F7 pages outside FLAGS remain in English. Brazilian Portuguese game text requires a compatible pack; Hooks does not include a complete game translation or new voice acting.
- Vanguard Combat Engine. Enable its combat rules individually: change how attributes and defense contribute to a fight, adjust status effects, and experiment with different costs for actions and party changes. This is an optional ruleset, not a mandatory rebalance.
- Elemental Dominion. Expand elemental combat with Holy, Shadow, Earth, Wind, Poison and Gravity options. The system includes percentage-based affinities, mixed-element attacks, more detailed Scan information and interactions between weaknesses, wards and elemental protection.
- Six new Nul spells. NulHoly, NulShadow, NulEarth, NulWind, NulPoison and NulGravity are supported in Yuna's White Magic+. Each costs 2 MP and gives one protective charge to each affected ally. They require compatible authored Sphere Grid nodes and local visual assets; turning on the option does not teach them automatically.
- Arcana of the Fayth. Collect a deck of 78 cards and save separate loadouts for the seven main characters, with up to three card slots. Twin and Constellation modes give you more ways to combine the deck, while card effects appear alongside the game's equipment and status screens.
- Elemental Arcana. Moon, Empress, Chariot, Death and Hanged Man carry Shadow, Earth, Wind, Poison and Gravity strike/ward pairs; Sun keeps Holystrike and Holy Ward. Poison and Gravity need the elemental core enabled. Weapon glow is a separate option from the card's combat effect.
- Equipment Workshop. Compare equipment, inspect its details, preview recipes and costs, refine pieces and explore expansion or fusion. The Workshop's extra ability support does not turn the game's original four equipment slots into five native slots; its additional progress is saved separately.
- Aeon Ascension. Spend Gil on eligible equipment for aeons you have already acquired. Armor upgrades can raise limits to 999,999 HP and 9,999 MP, while weapon upgrades can allow damage up to 999,999. Buying an upgrade does not refill HP or MP, and removing the item does not refund the purchase.
- A home for Reforge features. The menu exposes Arena+, Spira Reforged integration and options such as Ronso Mana, Grid Teach, Lancet Dual Grant and Nova Super Damage. These controls belong to their matching systems and content packs; they are not a promise that every feature works with an unmodified game.
- Maechen at F9. Open the in-game question window to ask for help through the configured service. This release includes the client interface; availability and answer quality still depend on the service, and the current build does not have complete in-game acceptance testing.
- Optional Fahrenheit V2 support. An additional download connects this build to a compatible Fahrenheit alpha12 setup. It is an add-on for an existing installation, not a complete Fahrenheit installer. Use the matching provider and bridge; Fahrenheit still controls Fastload in that setup.
Improvements
- Control the pace. Enable Speed Hack, then cycle through 1x, 2x, 4x and 8x with Ctrl+Shift+K. Dialogue skipping is separate, so you can choose faster play, fewer pauses, or both. High-speed scene coverage is still being tested. F12 remains available for screenshots.
- Video speed has its own switch. FMV acceleration is separate from normal game speed and requires a restart. It also speeds up the audio and raises its pitch; it is not a pitch-corrected movie player.
- Spend less time checking enemies. Permanent Sensor keeps enemy information available, while the party-wide AP option lets the whole group receive AP without rotating every character into each encounter.
- Set your own rewards. Adjust AP and Gil multipliers globally or by monster. Item-stack options and Double/Triple Drop support are also available, so reward changes can be selected separately from combat difficulty.
- Practice on your terms. Optional assists include party or enemy invincibility, an always-ready Overdrive, guaranteed critical hits, 99,999 damage and rare-item controls. Treat these as deliberate gameplay changes and try them on a spare save first.
- Window and input comfort. Options cover borderless display, keeping the cursor inside the game, hiding an idle cursor, a performance indicator, background input and IME handling. There is also a Windows-key blocker, although the desktop may still intercept that key.
- Controller setup. Choose the appropriate XInput or Steam Input path and configure digital button mappings and shortcuts. Keep the input setup consistent with your loader and other overlays to avoid two systems competing for the same controls.
- Look around and experiment. A free battle camera and field-scene freezing are available for supported situations. Playable Seymour is an experimental option and does not provide a normal Sphere Grid progression path.
- Tune encounters from F7. Difficulty offers Off, Hunter, Sombra de Sin and True Nightmare presets, alongside controls for enemy HP, MP, attributes, Overkill, elements and resistances. Apply Now and Save are separate actions, so applying a setting is not the same as saving it.
- Music and repeat battles. F7 includes track locking, battle-entry music overrides, shuffling and a track picker. The current playlist editor supports eight slots, an active-slot count and fade settings; full editing and some track names are still unfinished. Force Last Battle offers a bounded repeat-battle option, also awaiting broader gameplay testing.
- A limited S.I.N. pilot. The menu can configure a reviewed set of natural encounters around Macalania, alongside difficulty and reward settings. In-game curse targeting still needs confirmation. This is not yet a complete campaign-wide difficulty mode.
- Tools for mod authors. The Dev area includes FieldScout options, a full-deck Arcana option and Workshop development controls. Fastload Autosave is a separate convenience feature there; it has earlier player reports, but full confirmation for this exact beta is still pending.
Balance
- Vanguard attribute and defense rules. Separate options change percentage-based attributes and how defenses translate into survivability. Armor Break and Mental Break can use additive rules, while healing can be kept effective through Shell.
- Vanguard status rules. Adjust status duration and resistance, consume selected buffs at the end of an action, and limit Threaten to once per enemy incarnation. Elemental-opposition and guaranteed-hit policies are independently selectable too.
- Vanguard magic and turns. Options include Quickcast, White Magic support in Doublecast/Quickcast, magic strength tied to current MP, a turn cost for switching party members, and automatic replacement after Eject or Shatter.
- Thirteen Vanguard equipment abilities. The set includes Hero's Bravery, Hero's Caution, Energy Boost, Energy Burst, Energy Wall, Energy Barrier, Efficiency, Vampirism, Follow Up, P-Trade, M-Trade, MP Regen and Elude. Equipable active commands and partial Overdrive costs are separate parts of the system.
- Elemental protection with limits. Wards, Imperil and the new Nul spells are designed to interact with the expanded elemental system. Gravity has bounded behavior, and an optional magic damage cap reaches 999,999. These rules need the matching core and content support.
- Reforge equipment effects. Support includes Mana Spring, Break Limits, Devil's Bargain, Warden's Oath, Element Eater and HP, MP or attribute bonuses. A reserved name does not mean a finished effect: Arcane Focus, Spell Spring, Foolstrike and Fooltouch are not active features in this package.
Fixes
- F7 and F8 sounds now follow the result of the action, including completion, refusal and cancellation, so menu feedback is easier to interpret.
- If saving the interface-language preference fails, the previous language is preserved instead of leaving a choice that was not saved.
- The optional Fahrenheit integration includes menu focus and rendering fixes. Keep the matching add-on pieces together when updating.
Known issues
- This is a public beta. Visuals, audio, combat and save/load behavior still need broader in-game testing. Keep backups and use a spare save when trying a new system.
- An enabled switch is not always an active feature. Some options need a restart, a supported game build, an extra pack or a matching loader. Follow the setting's requirements before expecting a change in game.
- Compatibility is specific. Use the supported 32-bit Windows Steam build of Final Fantasy X HD Remaster; support does not extend to Final Fantasy X-2 or every game update. Proton setup instructions are provided, but Linux setups and combinations with other mods still need individual checks.
- Install with the game closed. The package needs a working compatible loader and does not include the game itself. Preserve your settings, saves and the extra saved data used by Arcana, Workshop, Aeon Ascension and Ronso when replacing or rolling back the mod.
- Other overlays can conflict. Special K, UnX and custom loaders may compete for input or rendering controls. Fahrenheit V2 has a matching integration; older or mismatched pieces and untested combinations can still cause trouble. Follow the relevant installation guide instead of stacking loaders indiscriminately.
- Nul spell visuals are not bundled as a ready-to-play asset pack. Compatible local assets and authored learning nodes are required. These spells are not unlocked just by installing the Hooks archive.
- Several experiments remain limited: Seymour, high-speed cutscenes, live difficulty changes, S.I.N. targeting, repeat battles and music controls still need broader gameplay checks. The menu lists what can be configured, not a guarantee of complete campaign compatibility.
